This article will show you how to install and configure Akismet in WordPress.
What Is Akismet?
Akismet is a comment spam blocking service which can be used for WordPress. Akismet checks your comments against the Akismet Web service to see if they look like spam or not and lets you review the spam it catches under your blog’s “Comments” admin screen.
Why Should Use Akismet?
Commenting is an integral part of blogging. However, there is a dark side to blog comments: spam. Comment spam is not only a headache to sort through and deal with on your own, but it can hurt your SEO efforts in the long run.
Comment moderation is a time consuming task, and Akismet can save you hours. Akismet will catch spam comments before it lands in your moderation queue as pending. This allows you to focus your energy on moderating comments by real users.
Install & Activate Akismet
Every WordPress installation comes with two plugins pre-installed. One of them is Akismet. Even though Akismet comes pre-installed, it is not activated by default. You will have to take some extra steps to activate it.
First, log into your WordPress admin and navigate to Plugins > Installed Plugins.
Click the Activate link below the Akismet plugin name and description.
You will find an Activate your Akismet account notice on the next screen.
Go ahead and click on the Activate your Akismet account button. You’ll be taken to the plugin’s settings screen.
To activate Akismet’s functionality, you will need to create a WordPress.com account and fetch what is known as an API key. This is basically just a confirmation code that allows the Akismet spam-blocking system to access your site and work its magic.
Click on Get your API key. You’ll be taken to the Akismet website. Click the Get Started button.
You will be redirected to a registration form for WordPress.com.
If you already have a WordPress.com account, then you can click on the link I already have a WordPress.com account. If you don’t have a WordPress.com account, then simply enter an E-mail address, Username and Password on this screen and click on Sign Up → button to create account.
Once the authentication with WordPress.com is complete, you will be taken back to the Akismet website. There you will be asked to provide some user details along with the payment information. If you picked the free plan, then simply drag the price amount to $0.
Click the Continue button and you’ll be taken to the screen that shows your API key. You will also receive an email from Akismet containing your API Key.
Copy your Akismet API key and go back to your Akismet configuration screen then paste and save the API key.
